NEGOTIATING REPRODUCTIVE AGENCY: SOCIAL REGULATION AND EMBODIED KNOWLEDGE IN BUGIS-MAKASSAR WOMEN’S RESPONSES TO PREGNANCY RISK

Cindy Israeni Ansar
Abstract: This study explores how Bugis-Makassar women construct and navigate plural reproductive knowledge in response to abortus imminens (threatened miscarriage), drawing on Talcott Parsons’ AGIL framework to analyze the sociocultural… ocultural functions of care practices. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Makassar, Indonesia, including interviews and participant observation with ten pregnant women, the study reveals that reproductive behavior is shaped by adaptive strategies (A), collective goals (G), moral integration (I), and intergenerational transmission of norms (L). Rather than following a singular medical logic, women mobilize syncretic forms of care that blend biomedical treatment, spiritual rituals, and ancestral taboos. These plural responses reflect not only epistemic hybridity but also reproductive governance enacted through kinship, religious authority, and clinical institutions. Women's agency is expressed not through open resistance, but through strategic moral navigation and embodied alignment with normative expectations—a form of what Mahmood terms the ethics of self-formation. The findings challenge biomedical-centric approaches to maternal health and highlight the need for culturally responsive interventions that respect local logics of risk, protection, and care. This study contributes to sociological debates on medical pluralism, moral regulation, and the reproduction of gendered knowledge in the Global South.

Abstract: Stunting remains a major public health issue in Pesisir Selatan Regency, where the prevalence reached 29.8% in 2023, affecting children’s physical growth and cognitive development. This study aimed to analyze the association… iation between maternal characteristics (parity, maternal age during pregnancy, age at marriage, birth spacing, education level, occupation, and exclusive breastfeeding) and family income with stunting among children under five. A cross-sectional design was employed involving 30 mothers of young children selected from the working area of Kayu Gadang Public Health Center. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and anthropometric measurements, and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The results showed that 66.7% of the children were stunted. Maternal characteristics—including parity, maternal age during pregnancy, age at marriage, birth spacing, educational level, and occupation—were not significantly associated with stunting (p>0.05). Significant associations were found between exclusive breastfeeding (p=0.019) and family income (p=0.026) with stunting. Children from families earning below the regional minimum wage and those not exclusively breastfed were more likely to be stunted. In conclusion, exclusive breastfeeding and family income are significant predictors of stunting. Therefore, interventions should emphasize improving exclusive breastfeeding practices and strengthening economic support for at-risk families. These findings are expected to guide evidence-based stunting prevention strategies in Pesisir Selatan Regency.

Conclusion: there is a significant influence between knowledge on interest in mothers using IUD and attitude on interest in mothers using IUD

MARRIAGE AS A RESPONSE TO PREMARITAL PREGNANCY: SOCIO-CULTURAL CONFINEMENT, LEGAL PLURALISM, AND RELIGIOUS PRAGMATISM IN NORTH HALMAHERA

Bakence, Lutfi, Sultan, Lomba, DL, Rahmatiah, Ridwan, Saleh
Abstract: Marriage involving pregnant women outside wedlock remains a critical socio-cultural and legal phenomenon in Indonesia, particularly in North Halmahera where family honor, religious authority, and customary law strongly influence… nfluence communal life. This study aimed to explore how such marriages are understood, legitimized, and practiced by families, community leaders, and legal institutions. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with religious leaders, adat leaders, government officials, parents, and young women, complemented by participant observation and document analysis, and analyzed with an interactive model of reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that marriage is primarily arranged to safeguard family honor, with communities regarding it as the only socially acceptable corrective measure, while religious leaders across traditions adopt pragmatic interpretations, invoking public interest or redemption to justify the practice, and customary rituals together with state dispensations further reinforce its legitimacy. Although marriage resolves immediate stigma and reintegrates families socially, it simultaneously generates long-term vulnerabilities, including interrupted education, economic dependence, marital instability, psychological stress, and increased maternal and neonatal health risks. This study contributes to the sociology of law and religion by demonstrating how socio-cultural confinement, Islamic legal pluralism, and adat practices converge in eastern Indonesia, while underscoring the urgent need for holistic interventions that integrate sexuality education, family communication, religious engagement, and legal reform to protect women and children more effectively.

WHEN WEIGHT DETERMINES CHILDBIRTH CHOICES: A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY OF OBESE PREGNANT WOMEN AT REGIONAL HOSPITAL DR. H. ABDUL MOELOEK OF LAMPUNG

Juwita Desri Ayu, Sugiarto
Abstract: Obesity in mothers is a major worldwide health issue that significantly raises the need for obstetric procedures, especially cesarean sections. Numerous difficulties for both mothers and newborns have been linked to elevated… ated pre-pregnancy and gestational body mass indexes (BMI). The purpose of this study is to characterize the distribution of delivery methods among pregnant women who are obese at Dr. H. Abdul Moeloek Regional Hospital in Lampung Province, Indonesia. Total sampling was used to perform a quantitative, descriptive retrospective analysis. 58 pregnant women with a BMI of 30 kg/m² or above who gave birth between 2017 and 2023 were included. SPSS version 27.0 was utilized for data analysis. Findings out of the 58 instances that could be analyzed, 69.0% of obese pregnant women gave delivery via cesarean section, 27.6% gave birth spontaneous vaginally, and 3.4% had a vacuum induction. The majority (31.0%) were between the ages of 35 and 39, and 77.6% were multiparous. The type of delivery was found to be strongly influenced by maternal age, parity, and obesity. Being obese greatly raises the risk of having a cesarean section, especially for older and multiparous women. Reducing needless cesarean rates and improving mother and newborn outcomes may be possible with early treatments such as lifestyle modification education, prenatal counseling, and BMI-based risk assessment.
