The Revitalization and Preservation of Indigenous Ghanaian Textiles in Contemporary Fashion Design

William, Daitey, Eddy Mary, Takyi, Nathalie, Bonnah
Abstract: This study investigates the revitalization and preservation of indigenous Ghanaian textiles in contemporary fashion design, emphasizing their cultural significance, economic potential, and modern challenges. Traditional… textiles such as “kente”, “kete”, “adinkra”, and “fugu”/ “batakari” are central to Ghana’s cultural heritage, symbolizing identity and tradition. However, the industry faces hurdles including high production costs, competition from cheaper imports, and diminishing traditional knowledge among younger generations. Adopting a qualitative approach, the research utilized interviews, focus group discussions, and observations involving artisans, fashion designers, educators, and consumers. Findings reveal that despite the immense value of indigenous textiles, their integration into modern fashion is impeded by limited access to raw materials, fluctuating market demand, and inadequate artisan support. Innovative designers, however, are blending traditional textiles with contemporary trends, showcasing adaptability and global appeal. The study recommends strategies such as public education campaigns, financial and technical support for artisans, and stronger intellectual property protections. Promoting sustainable practices, addressing regional production disparities, and fostering designer-artisan collaborations are also key to the industry’s sustainability. This research underscores the role of Ghanaian textiles in economic empowerment and cultural preservation, advocating for a balanced approach that merges tradition with modern innovation to ensure global relevance and sustainability.

REVITALIZATION OF BUGIS-MAKASSAR LOCAL WISDOM IN FAMILY MEDIATION AS AN EFFORT TO PREVENT DIVORCE

Muhammadong
Abstract: Divorce is a societal problem that affects children, extended families, married couples, and the general social resilience of communities. Local wisdom values, such as siri' na pacce, sipakatau, sipakalebbi, sipakainge,… and tudang sipulung, stand for respect, empathy, accountability, and thoughtful dispute resolution in Bugis-Makassar society. The goal of this study is to determine how applicable Bugis-Makassar traditional knowledge is to family mediation as a divorce prevention tactic and how it may be updated and revived. This study employed a descriptive design and a qualitative methodology. In-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving couples who had experienced marital discord, as well as traditional leaders, religious leaders, mediators, and family members involved in mediation procedures, were used to collect data. Techniques for data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing were used to analyze the data. The findings indicate that while sipakatau and sipakalebbi improve respect between married couples, siri' na pacce strengthens accountability and empathy. While tudang sipulung provides a deliberative setting for discovering common answers, sipakainge encourages constructive reminders. The findings suggest that the parties' desire to voluntarily embrace the mediation process can be increased by involving traditional authorities, religious leaders, and dependable family members. Reviving these ideals in an adaptive, equitable, and impartial manner might support family mediation. The results of this study show that incorporating local knowledge into family mediation could be beneficial in reducing divorce.

THE DETERMINATION OF STATE BASELINES POST-PEAT ABRASION ON BENGKALIS ISLAND AS INDONESIA'S FOREMOST ISLAND IN TERMS OF INTERNATIONAL LAW OF THE SEA PERSPECTIVE

Cahyani, Harpita Dwi, Maria Maya Lestari, Ledy Diana
Abstract: Coastal abrasion is a growing global concern, particularly for Indonesia, a country with one of the longest coastlines in the world. Abrasion poses significant challenges to coastal ecosystems and the livelihoods of local… l communities. Bengkalis Island, one of Indonesia's outermost and foremost islands, has experienced intensified abrasion in recent decades. Located in Riau Province and facing the Strait of Malacca, this peat-contoured island serves as a basepoint for Indonesia's archipelagic baselines. This research aims to: (1) analyze the legal implications of peat erosion on Indonesia's baselines post-erosion, and (2) describe the Indonesian government's efforts to address the issue.  This normative legal research examines the synchronization between national regulations and international standards regarding peatland conservation and erosion mitigation, particularly in strategically important foremost islands. The study reveals two key findings. First, peat abrasion on Bengkalis Island has serious legal implications for determining Indonesia's archipelagic baselines and maritime boundaries under UNCLOS 1982. Abrasion also threatens the island's status as an outermost and foremost island, potentially leading to the loss of Indonesia's rights over natural resources in the area. Failure to protect peat ecosystems may be considered a violation of Indonesia's international obligations to preserve marine and wetland environments under UNCLOS 1982 and the Ramsar Convention. Second, the Indonesian government has implemented legal and technical measures, such as issuing Government Regulation No. 57 of 2016 on Peat Ecosystem Protection and Management, constructing breakwaters, planting mangroves, and implementing the 3R program (Rewetting, Revegetation, and Revitalization) through the Peat and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM). These efforts have shown positive results in reducing erosion rates and protecting coastalines.

Makna Teologis dan Nilai Antropologis Tradisi Natoni dalam Kehidupan Masyarakat Kristen

Veren Veronika Manu, Yohana Angelina Pobas, Yusmin Tapeun, Jello Ottu, Yenry Anastasia Pellondou
Abstract: The Natoni tradition, as an oral cultural heritage of the Timorese community, embodies religious and social dimensions that reflect the relationship between Christian faith and local wisdom. However, the currents of modernization… rnization and shifts in the lifestyle of younger generations have led to a diminishing understanding of its symbols, ritual language, and moral messages, thereby placing its existence at risk of marginalization. This study addresses the question of how the theological meaning and anthropological values of Natoni are understood and actualized within Christian communities, and to what extent this tradition contributes to the formation of faith identity and social cohesion. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilizing in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the practice and its meanings. The findings reveal that Natoni functions as a contextual medium of prayer, a means of internalizing faith teachings, a bond of communal solidarity, and a vehicle for transmitting values of respect, responsibility, and intergenerational togetherness. The tradition provides an integrative space between incarnational theology and local cultural realities, thereby enriching contextual expressions of Christian spirituality. The study concludes that the revitalization of Natoni requires synergy among the church, traditional leaders, families, and educational institutions to ensure its continued relevance and responsiveness to contemporary challenges. The novelty of this research lies in its simultaneous integration of theological and anthropological analyses of Natoni as a contextual praxis of faith rather than merely a cultural phenomenon, thus offering a conceptual contribution to the development of Indonesian contextual theology.
