THE QUR'AN IN RITES: HISTORICAL ANALYSIS AND ACCULTURATION OF JAVANESE CULTURE

Samsul Ariyadi
Abstract: This article examines the transformation of the meaning of the Quran in the context of death rites and death commemorations in Javanese society, especially in Central Java and Yogyakarta, during the period 2000–2023. This… his research approach is qualitative by utilizing ethnographic data, archival studies, ritual documentation, and in-depth interviews with ritual practitioners. The use of the Quran, which was originally a sacred Islamic text with normative content, has undergone a transformation of meaning when adapted into traditional Javanese rites. The process of cultural acculturation that occurred illustrates the dynamics between ancestral traditions and Islamic values, which provide space for the reinterpretation of religious symbols by local communities (Anderson, 2003; Suryadi, 2011). The historical analysis method and the theory of cultural transformation proposed by Clifford Geertz are used to explain the evolution of the use of the sacred text and highlight the role of ritual as a medium for negotiating meaning between cultures. The results of the study show that the insertion of Quranic verses into Javanese mantras not only functions as a sacred element, but also as a tool for social legitimacy and cultural identity of the Javanese people. This finding opens up opportunities for further study on the integrative role of ritual in shaping religious and cultural identity in Indonesia.

THE DETERMINATION OF STATE BASELINES POST-PEAT ABRASION ON BENGKALIS ISLAND AS INDONESIA'S FOREMOST ISLAND IN TERMS OF INTERNATIONAL LAW OF THE SEA PERSPECTIVE

Cahyani, Harpita Dwi, Maria Maya Lestari, Ledy Diana
Abstract: Coastal abrasion is a growing global concern, particularly for Indonesia, a country with one of the longest coastlines in the world. Abrasion poses significant challenges to coastal ecosystems and the livelihoods of local… l communities. Bengkalis Island, one of Indonesia's outermost and foremost islands, has experienced intensified abrasion in recent decades. Located in Riau Province and facing the Strait of Malacca, this peat-contoured island serves as a basepoint for Indonesia's archipelagic baselines. This research aims to: (1) analyze the legal implications of peat erosion on Indonesia's baselines post-erosion, and (2) describe the Indonesian government's efforts to address the issue.  This normative legal research examines the synchronization between national regulations and international standards regarding peatland conservation and erosion mitigation, particularly in strategically important foremost islands. The study reveals two key findings. First, peat abrasion on Bengkalis Island has serious legal implications for determining Indonesia's archipelagic baselines and maritime boundaries under UNCLOS 1982. Abrasion also threatens the island's status as an outermost and foremost island, potentially leading to the loss of Indonesia's rights over natural resources in the area. Failure to protect peat ecosystems may be considered a violation of Indonesia's international obligations to preserve marine and wetland environments under UNCLOS 1982 and the Ramsar Convention. Second, the Indonesian government has implemented legal and technical measures, such as issuing Government Regulation No. 57 of 2016 on Peat Ecosystem Protection and Management, constructing breakwaters, planting mangroves, and implementing the 3R program (Rewetting, Revegetation, and Revitalization) through the Peat and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM). These efforts have shown positive results in reducing erosion rates and protecting coastalines.

Abstract: Social media has transformed the global communication landscape and has become a vital instrument in increasing awareness and public participation on various environmental issues. This study aims to analyze the role and… impact of social media in encouraging public engagement in environmental movements, both at the local and global levels. Using a qualitative approach with a combination of systematic literature analysis and multiple case studies, this research examines how social media platforms facilitate the dissemination of environmental information, promote collective action, and create spaces for discussions on environmental sustainability. The findings indicate that social media plays a significant role in mobilizing individuals to take concrete actions on environmental issues through three main mechanisms: (1) democratization of environmental information, (2) facilitation of the formation of environmental communities, and (3) acceleration of collective responses to urgent environmental issues. Further analysis reveals that the effectiveness of social media use in environmental campaigns heavily depends on content strategies, timing, and the involvement of environmental influencers. The study also finds a positive correlation between the intensity of social media usage for environmental purposes and the level of public awareness and active involvement in environmental preservation. Additionally, the research highlights the significant role of social media as a catalyst for pro-environmental behavior among younger generations. These findings contribute significantly to the development of more effective environmental communication strategies in the digital era, emphasizing the importance of digital literacy in the context of environmental activism. The study recommends combining social media power with concrete actions to achieve optimal impact in addressing environmental challenges.

A. Muhaimin Ikhwan, Jumadi Sahabuddin
Abstract: This study examines the development of the Rammang-Rammang karst landscape in Maros Regency, South Sulawesi, into a prominent ecotourism destination, through an anthropological perspective. Utilizing qualitative methods—including… including in-depth interviews, participant observation, and focus group discussions—this research explores how the local community navigates the rapid shift from a traditional agrarian and riverine lifestyle to a tourism-based economy. Anthropological analysis reveals that while ecotourism provides alternative livelihoods and fosters local pride, it also introduces challenges regarding cultural commodification, shifts in communal values, and spatial contestation. The findings indicate that the local community exercises significant agency by integrating their ancestral kinship networks (siri’ na pacce) into modern tourism management. This cultural adaptation serves as a mechanism for community resilience, ensuring that external commercial pressures do not fully erode local identity. This study concludes that sustainable tourism development in heritage sites like Rammang-Rammang depends on recognizing local communities not merely as stakeholders, but as active cultural custodians of the karst landscape

Pengaruh Konten Media Sosial terhadap Perilaku Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) untuk meningkatkan Konsumerisme pada Generasi Z

Zaki Rahman Putra, Nur Hayati
Abstract: This research discusses the influence of social media content on the emergence of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) behavior and its connection to increasing consumerism in Generation Z. This generation grew up in a digital ecosystem… system saturated with visualizations of ideal lifestyles disseminated through platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter. Constant exposure to such content creates anxiety about missing out on seemingly important social experiences. FOMO then triggers consumptive actions, not due to functional needs, but because of symbolic impulses and social pressure to remain relevant within digital communities. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with in-depth interviews of informants aged 20–26 years. The analysis results show that content such as unboxing, product reviews, and personal lifestyles have a significant impact on creating social pressure and shaping consumption-based identity. These findings underscore the importance of digital literacy and critical awareness so that Generation Z does not get trapped in a cycle of impulsive consumption, which poses risks to both mental and financial health. As an alternative, the Joy of Missing Out (JOMO) approach is introduced to build healthier and more authentic digital relationships.

Imelda C Laode, Fransin Kontu, Fitriani
Abstract: This study aims to analyze the factors influencing the social interaction of the Kanum ethnic group as cross-border actors between the Sota area (Indonesia) and Waiber (Papua New Guinea). The Kanum people are indigenous… communities residing on both sides of the border, sharing strong historical, cultural, and economic ties. The research was conducted in Kampung Sota, Sota District, Merauke Regency, South Papua Province, using a qualitative method with a descriptive approach and interactive model analysis by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. The findings reveal that the key supporting factors for social interaction are mostly located in Sota-Indonesia, including better geographic access, infrastructure availability, border pass policy, favorable security conditions, and active economic and educational activities. On the other hand, the main hindering factors are found in Waiber-PNG, such as difficult geographic access, lack of infrastructure, limited governmental policies, and issues related to civil registration. Culturally and socially, the Kanum people experience no barriers due to shared values, traditions, and language. This study concludes that cross-border interdependence is not solely determined by national boundaries but also shaped by socio-cultural dynamics and inclusive policies. Keywords: Kanum ethnic, social interaction, cross-border, border, interdependence.
