Abstract:This study examines the role of textual practice (micro-structure) in shaping humanitarian narratives in news coverage of the Israel-Palestine conflict by CNN US and CNN Indonesia. Employing Fairclough’s Critical Discourse…
urse Analysis (CDA), the research identifies key linguistic features, including lexical choices, sentence structure, modality, rhetorical devices, and pronoun usage, that contribute to the ideological framing of news articles. The findings indicate that CNN US employs neutral and euphemistic language, passive constructions, and hedging devices to maintain journalistic objectivity, whereas CNN Indonesia utilizes emotionally charged language, active voice, and definitive claims to frame the conflict with a strong pro-Palestinian stance. These textual differences underscore the influence of language in constructing public perceptions of humanitarian crises.
Abstract:This paper will focus on one of the cases related to pollution caused by the disposal of oil spills into the sea, a case study of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. In that matter, this paper can ''provide the stage'' for several…
al relevant cases related to MARPOL 73/78 to build a discourse on environmental protection at sea based on the perspective of international environmental law. The writing of this paper uses a normative juridical legal research method. Judging from this Exxon Valdez case study, it can be agreed that this international treaty related to the prevention of pollution from ships or MARPOL has a renewal of its effectiveness if there has been an incident of pollution at sea in the past. The incident that impacted MARPOL 73/78 itself has also taught us the importance of protecting marine ecosystems.
Abstract:This study investigates the rhetorical and discourse functions of repetition in the English translation of Surah Al-Mursalat by M.A.S. Abdel Haleem, focusing on the refrain “Woe on that Day to those who denied the truth.”…
h.” Using a qualitative descriptive method grounded in stylistics and discourse analysis, the study explores how this fixed phrase, repeated ten times across the chapter, operates at multiple linguistic levels. The analysis reveals that the refrain serves three interrelated functions: stylistically, it foregrounds divine warning and creates rhythmic cohesion; structurally, it segments the surah into thematic units and signals discourse boundaries; rhetorically, it intensifies condemnation and engages the reader emotionally through cumulative repetition. Abdel Haleem’s consistent rendering of the refrain retains these functions effectively, unlike other translations that introduce lexical variation. The findings demonstrate that repetition in Qur’anic translation is not merely ornamental but performs essential linguistic and communicative roles. This study contributes to Qur’anic stylistics, translation studies, and discourse analysis by showing that sacred texts, when translated with rhetorical sensitivity, can preserve the stylistic integrity of the original.
Abstract:This study examines how thematic organization contributes to the construction of state power and social positioning in international news discourse. Drawing on Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics, with a specific…
c focus on Theme–Rheme structure, the study analyses a BBC news report published in November 2023 on the Russian Supreme Court’s decision to designate the so-called “international LGBT movement” as an extremist organization. Using a qualitative textual approach, the text is segmented into clauses and analyzed to identify patterns of thematic choice and progression. The findings reveal a consistent foregrounding of institutional actors, such as state authorities and legal bodies, in Theme position when reporting legal actions and policy decisions, while members of the LGBT community and civil society figures are predominantly thematized in clauses expressing reactions, personal experiences, and anticipated consequences. This asymmetric thematic distribution constructs a discourse in which state authority is positioned as the primary agent of action, whereas affected social groups are framed as respondents to institutional power. The study demonstrates that ideological meanings in news discourse may be realized implicitly through grammatical organization rather than explicit evaluative language, and it highlights the value of Theme–Rheme analysis for examining power relations in contemporary international news reporting.
