The Subtextual Significances of Pragmatic Equivalence in Translating Humor

Ni Nyoman Sarmi, Rommel Utungga Pasopati, Dyah Ayu Ratna Jelita, Yoshua Veron Handika Putra Siadari, Agischa Putri Agil, Muhammad Daffa Firzatullah
Abstract: This article examines the importance of pragmatic equivalence in translating humor, a crucial yet often challenging aspect due to humor’s deep reliance on cultural context, implicature, and audience interpretation. Pragmatic… gmatic equivalence emphasizes the conveyance of implicit meaning through communication principles such as those proposed by Grice, where coherence takes precedence over mere lexical and grammatical cohesion. In humor translation, coherence refers to the interconnectedness of meaning based on shared context and knowledge between the author and the audience, rather than simply the structure of sentences. However, humor is inherently ambiguous and open to multiple interpretations, making its meaning not always directly transferable. A single mistranslated element can alter the entire comedic effect, as humor is often highly culture-specific. In this case, the translator’s role extends beyond language transfer to bridging the knowledge gap that the target audience might have, sometimes at the cost of the humor’s spontaneity. This challenge creates a dilemma between preserving natural comedic effect and delivering accurate meaning. As a result, humor translation often leans toward either overly literal or overly liberal approaches, each with the risk of losing essential nuance. Therefore, pragmatic equivalence involves more than just finding corresponding meanings; it also requires sensitivity to the social and cultural contexts that shape audience responses. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on the unique complexity of humor translation, making it a valuable contribution to the fields of literary studies, linguistics, and translation studies.

Sirajul Rahman, Aldi Firdaus
Abstract: Communication is a fundamental aspect of human life that enables individuals to connect and interact with one another. In the context of an organization, communication plays a crucial role in building effective relationships… hips among its members. Harold Lasswell described communication as a process that can be explained through the following questions: “who says what in which channel to whom with what effect?” This question highlights the complexity of communication within an organization, which is also relevant for study in organizations such as the Student Representative Council of Muhammadiyah University of Palangkaraya, especially in the context of significant changes that are taking place. This study aims to understand the dynamics of communication in the cadre training process between the management and members of the organization. The primary focus of the research is to explore how communication occurs between the management and members during cadre training activities. This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive type, along with data collection techniques involving interviews and documentation. To ensure data validity, the researcher employs triangulation of sources, techniques, and time. The findings of the study show that communication in the cadre training process is divided into two categories: internal and external communication. Internal communication involves interactions between the management and members within the organization, with freedom in conveying information between leaders, managers, and members. Meanwhile, external communication focuses on the relationship between the organization and other institutions, to convey aspirations in accordance with its tasks and authority. Additionally, the cadre system in this organization combines both formal and informal training, although there are differences in how each faculty representative conducts cadre training. Overall, this organization is able to implement a more optimal cadre system, especially in preparing the core management.

Abstract: This study aims to analyze and provide recommendations regarding the arrangement of pedestrian facilities in the Campus 1 area of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. This area plays an important role as the center of academic,… ademic, social, and mobility activities of the academic community, which heavily depends on pedestrian facilities. Field observations reveal several key issues with the pedestrian facilities in this area, including the sidewalk width not meeting the minimum standard, lack of accessibility features for people with disabilities, absence of vegetation or shade, and insufficient signage and road markings to guide users. These conditions result in discomfort and insecurity for pedestrians, as well as failing to support the principles of inclusivity in infrastructure planning. The research employs a descriptive qualitative and quantitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through field observations, questionnaires, interviews, and literature reviews. Based on the analysis, the majority of respondents expressed the need for improvements to the sidewalk quality, addition of shade trees, enhanced accessibility for people with disabilities, and the installation of supporting facilities such as street lighting. The study then recommends several improvement measures, such as widening the sidewalks to at least 1.5 meters, providing ramps and Guiding blocks, planting vegetation along the pedestrian routes, and installing road signs and markings. These recommendations aim to improve pedestrian comfort and safety. It is hoped that the results of this study can serve as a reference for Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu in creating a campus area that is more friendly, safe, comfortable, and inclusive for all users, while also supporting sustainable mobility.

Pretty Maggiesty Rosantika, Geby Fatona, Rizqiyah Safitri Juwito, Renitha Sari, Mariska Pratimi, Anggi Yudha Pratama
Abstract: Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu (UMB) has great potential to develop into an environmentally friendly and sustainable Green Campus. This study aims to analyze the existing conditions of the campus, identify challenges… s and opportunities, and formulate appropriate development strategies to create a greener campus. The research methods used include surveys, in-depth interviews, secondary data analysis, and field observations to gain a comprehensive understanding of the current situation. The findings of the study indicate that UMB faces several challenges, including the limited green open space, which only covers 15% of the total campus area, suboptimal waste management, and the low awareness of the academic community regarding environmental sustainability issues. However, there are several opportunities that can be leveraged, such as the utilization of renewable energy technologies, government policies that increasingly support environmentally friendly initiatives, and the potential for collaboration with external partners from both the private sector and government institutions. The proposed development strategy focuses on five main aspects. First, increasing the campus’s green open space to 30% of the total campus area. Second, the implementation of renewable energy, such as the installation of solar panels, to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Third, waste management based on technology to effectively recycle waste. Fourth, the application of digital-based environmental education to raise awareness among the academic community. Fifth, maximizing student participation in sustainability activities. This strategy aims to reduce carbon footprints, improve resource efficiency, and create a campus ecosystem that supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Rindy Retno Prihastari, Salsabila Aulia Azizah, Sri Pingit Wulandari
Abstract: East Java Province is a region with significant economic contribution in Indonesia, occupying the third position nationally with a contribution of 14.26%. However, despite its rapid economic growth, East Java still faces… welfare challenges, especially in terms of poverty which is still relatively high compared to other provinces on the island of Java. The poverty rate in East Java is on a downward trend, but it still remains above the national average. This condition indicates an imbalance in the welfare of the community in the East Java region. Welfare is measured based on the ability of the community to meet decent, healthy, and productive basic needs, with the Human Development Index (HDI) as one of the main indicators. HDI can measure human development achievements based on several basic components of quality of life, including the education dimension, the age and health dimension, and the standard of decent living. Therefore, the government needs to group regions with appropriate characteristics to make it easier to make policies. One of the statistical analyses that can be used in this study is cluster analysis. The results of this study are that East Java Province in 2023 shows a diversity of welfare indicators, such as TPT, HDI, and AHH, reflecting differences in economic, educational, and health conditions between regions. The cluster method with the best assessment in this study is the K-Means method with five clusters. The characteristics in clusters I and II tend to have low welfare, while clusters III, IV, and V show better welfare. The results of this study show a change in the number of clusters compared to previous research conducted by Muhammad Fikry Al Farizi et al. in 2022. The previous study produced four clusters using the average linkage method.
