Exploring the Determinants of Poverty Gap in Sumatra Island: A Spatial Regression Approach

Shalma, Euis, Ratih Yulihar Taher, Arivina
Abstract: The poverty gap index is an important indicator in planning more effective and targeted policies, but it has rarely been studied. This study analyzes the distribution pattern of poverty gap and the influence of non-food… per capita expenditure, open unemployment rate, and Gini ratio on poverty gap in districts/municipalities in Sumatra Island in 2023. Using cross-section data from 154 districts/municipalities, the analysis was conducted through the calculation of the global Moran index and spatial autoregressive (SAR) regression. The results show that the gap of poverty in Sumatra Island has a clustered spatial pattern. Regions with moderate to high poverty gap are concentrated in the northern, southern, and western islands, especially in Aceh, Bengkulu, South Sumatra, Lampung, and Nias, Mentawai, and Meranti Islands. In contrast, the central part of Sumatra tends to have lower poverty gap. From the regression analysis, non-food per capita expenditure has a negative effect and Gini ratio has a positive effect on poverty gap. These findings emphasize the importance of considering spatial factors in the formulation of poverty alleviation policies in Sumatra.

A Case Study on the Social Interaction with the Opposite Sex of Early Adult Women Raised by Single Mothers Since Childhood (Without a Father)

Salsabila, Syifa, Nurlita, Nurul
Abstract: This research uses a case study methodology to examine the social interactions of early adult women raised in single-parent households where the father figure has been absent since childhood. Data were collected through… interviews, observations, and field notes. The study reveals that the informants had strong attachments to their fathers and experienced deep grief upon their fathers' deaths, which led to social withdrawal and reluctance to engage with the opposite sex. The absence of a father figure significantly impacted the informants' social development, particularly in forming relationships with the opposite sex. Informants expressed feelings of loss and were reluctant to open up to others, especially men, due to their grief and a sense of abandonment. Despite these challenges, the informants eventually adapted by accepting the reality of their father’s death, finding comfort in spiritual growth and learning to accept themselves. This study highlights the long-lasting effects of father absence on social behaviors, particularly in early adulthood, and how these individuals navigate their relationships with others.

Behavioral Finance in the Age of Technology: The Evolving Biases of Modern Investors

Svoboda, Andreas
Abstract: The rapid integration of financial technology (FinTech), artificial intelligence (AI), and social media has transformed global investment behavior, reshaping the psychological dynamics of modern investors. This paper examines… mines how digital technologies amplify behavioral biases such as overconfidence, herding, and recency bias within contemporary financial markets. Using a descriptive qualitative approach supported by literature synthesis and case studies, it explores the interplay between investor psychology and technological systems. Findings indicate that while FinTech platforms democratize access to financial markets, their gamified features and algorithmic personalization reinforce impulsive and emotionally driven trading. AI-based advisory systems, though designed to enhance decision accuracy, often introduce automation bias and confirmation loops that distort rational judgment. Social media ecosystems further accelerate herding and emotional contagion by promoting conformity through peer validation and viral sentiment. The study highlights ethical and regulatory challenges associated with behavioral exploitation and algorithmic transparency, emphasizing the need for robust investor protection frameworks and behavioral literacy programs. Ultimately, it concludes that technology in finance must balance innovation with responsibility, ensuring that digital tools empower investors without amplifying cognitive biases or undermining market integrity.

Digital Intimacy and the Death of Presence: Rethinking Human Relations in Hyperconnected Societies

William, Daitey
Abstract: The rapid expansion of digital communication technologies has transformed the structure of human interaction within hyperconnected societies. This study examines the emergence of digital intimacy and its implications for… the decline of authentic human presence in contemporary communication practices. Using a qualitative conceptual approach grounded in communication theory, media ecology, existential philosophy, and critical digital studies, this article explores how social media platforms, algorithmic systems, and virtual interaction reshape intimacy, identity, and relational experience. The findings reveal that hyperconnectivity produces a paradoxical condition in which individuals remain continuously connected yet increasingly experience emotional fragmentation, loneliness, performative communication, and communicative fatigue. The study introduces the concept of “presence erosion” to explain the weakening of embodied interaction and existential closeness caused by excessive technological mediation. Furthermore, the article argues that digital capitalism commodifies emotional expression and social interaction through engagement-driven communication systems that prioritize visibility over authenticity. Although digital technologies provide opportunities for global connectivity and social participation, they simultaneously threaten the depth of human relationships by replacing direct presence with symbolic and algorithmic interaction. This study contributes to global communication scholarship by offering an interdisciplinary theoretical framework for understanding the crisis of presence in digital civilization. Ultimately, the article emphasizes the importance of reconstructing communicative ethics grounded in empathy, attentiveness, and authentic human engagement within increasingly mediated social environments.

William, Daitey, Eddy Mary, Takyi, Nathalie, Bonnah
Abstract: This study investigates the revitalization and preservation of indigenous Ghanaian textiles in contemporary fashion design, emphasizing their cultural significance, economic potential, and modern challenges. Traditional… textiles such as “kente”, “kete”, “adinkra”, and “fugu”/ “batakari” are central to Ghana’s cultural heritage, symbolizing identity and tradition. However, the industry faces hurdles including high production costs, competition from cheaper imports, and diminishing traditional knowledge among younger generations. Findings reveal that despite the immense value of indigenous textiles, their integration into modern fashion is impeded by limited access to raw materials, fluctuating market demand, and inadequate artisan support. Innovative designers, however, are blending traditional textiles with contemporary trends, showcasing adaptability and global appeal. The study recommends strategies such as public education campaigns, financial and technical support for artisans, and stronger intellectual property protections. Promoting sustainable practices, addressing regional production disparities, and fostering designer-artisan collaborations are also key to the industry’s sustainability. This research underscores the role of Ghanaian textiles in economic empowerment and cultural preservation, advocating for a balanced approach that merges tradition with modern innovation to ensure global relevance and sustainability.
